Tuesday, June 2, 2015
Students in the Wind Power Certificate and Construction Preparation Programs had the pleasure of visiting the Massachusetts Maritime Academy located on Cape Cod, at the mouth of the scenic Cape Cod Canal. The tour gave students the opportunity to visit the power plant, on-site generation facilities that utilize green/renewable energy including a commercial wind turbine, photovoltaic arrays, and a vertical axis wind turbine and a geo-thermal installation.
Students boarded the Kennedy and were taken on a tour of the vessel's wheelhouse, map room, lower decks and were allowed to climb inside the 75-passenger lifeboat.
Students also visited the Bresnahan Building which contains engineering laboratories, the Cargo Handling Simulator, Gas Turbine Trainer, the Hydraulics/ Pneumatics Simulator, and the Diesel Simulator. It also houses the Medium Speed Diesel Simulator, a welding lab, an electrical lab, and a machine shop.
